Köçek signals from the first scene onwards, where newly starred Müjde Ar of ‘Aşk-ı Memnu’ is wandering around with her musician friends as Caniko, swearing around in every possible way she can, that it is going to be an astounding journey. Caniko, being rough in the way she walks and talks, perplexes people: “Is she a man or a woman?”. Thus, she becomes a “draft man”, a “dancer boy”. She is not permitted to live as she feels and pleases. A part of her must abide by the normative. With a libido as high as a mountain and a surprise every other second, Köçek creates a universe in the eyes of the viewer where border lines become vague and different identities become intertwined. Although Caniko cannot live up to her dream, the film is still worth seeing for its rebelliousness, glorification of fantesies and handling of sexual orientations. Burcu Aykar Şirin
